Putting Painful Photos in the Past - Day 3

Hi

Today you will learn that being off-center is okay!

© Ken Jarvis

Place your subject off-center. Many amateur shooters generally aim for the middle of the frame, creating a bull's-eye composition that's too often static. But photography isn't archery or darts. There are occasional exceptions, but in general, placing your subject off-center can add an amazing vitality to your photos.

The rule of thirds, by the way, takes the concept one step further. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid across your viewfinder. Then position the photo's main focal point at one of the four intersections of lines. This doesn't always work, but when it does, it adds even more visual energy to your composition.

Thanks,
