Putting Painful Photos in the Past - Day 13

Hi

Many of the techniques I've been sending you have been centered around the idea of standing out from the crowd. Taking a slightly different approach is one way to make your photos more appealing, and less average. Today's lesson provides another example of a simple way to take your photo from average to amazing!

Watch that horizon. Most picture-takers put the horizon line - or distant shoreline - right in the middle of the frame, which frequently results in a static, even boring composition. Instead, for a more dynamic image, compose your picture with the horizon higher or lower in the frame. To decide which will work better, simply ask yourself, "Which is more attractive and interesting - the sky, or the land/sea in the foreground? If it's the sky, place the horizon low. If it's the foreground, place it high. Side note: Also try to keep the straight horizon line perfectly level, since even the slightest slant can distract the viewer.
