Featured Article: How to Cut and Paste for Creating Fine Art ... by Jim Zuckerman
Photographers use Photoshop in many ways. For BetterPhoto instructor Jim Zuckerman, "I love to create surrealism and fine art, and like to think beyond the obvious. One of the best ways to do that is to cut and paste one image into another". See a captivating image and read Jim's step-by-step approach... Read how to cut and paste here...
August Afternoon One of my first forays with my new camera. The day was hot and hazy, so I added the sky from an image taken with my faithful D40. (DD) | August Afternoon original |

New Photo Discussions
New Photo Discussion 1: Vine Tomatoes
- Scott Elam See Scott 's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:And a great background it is, Karol. I love it. The tomatoes themselves look out of this world - I adore fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes. Is this a layered composite or did you distort the actual background these tomatoes were on and then take out the distortion on the tomatoes themselves? All sorts of exciting possibilities are running around in my mind... - Nikki McDonald See Nikki's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 2:Thank you so much, Nikki. I duplicated the image of the tomatoes, then used the PS Wave Distort Filter on that duplicate. I then opened the original and distorted the background as layers in PS and brought the tomatoes through the background using layer masking. It's a lot of fun to see what you can do with the Wave Distort filter. There are so many sliders that the possibilities are endless. It's actually hard to decide which one to use. - Karol Grace See Karol's Basic BetterPholio™ Visit threedogstudio.com - Karol's Deluxe BetterPholio™ Response 3:You're very welcome. I hope you have fun with it. Another cool thing about Wave Distort is that, depending on the size you end up with (by using the sliders), there can be miniature repetitions of your original photo sprinkled throughout the distorted version. I don't know if you an see the miniature tomatoes in this one or not. - Karol Grace See Karol's Basic BetterPholio™ Visit threedogstudio.com - Karol's Deluxe BetterPholio™ Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
New Photo Discussion 2: 'Casablanca' scene
- Rickey Scroggins See Rickey's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:Thanks for the complement Rickey! We dressed the couple like the last scene in the movie Casablanca. I left this one untitled as there are so many ways to interpret this scene. - Sara B. Coffey See Sara's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 2:Outstanding shot and love the effects, great planning too. - Robert D. Proctor See Robert's Basic BetterPholio™ Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
New Photo Discussion 3: Oranges
- Joni Earley See Joni's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:I made the background black by totally underexposing in camera raw, I used saturation to bring back the color, and then I cloned in a bunch. Originally, there was the big ball in the corner, the parasol, and one ball. Glad you like it! (I picked up the half moon faded balls by a mistake with the clone tool, then kept them). - Laura J. Smith See Laura's Basic BetterPholio™ Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
New Photo Discussion 4: Surprise Visit
- Kaj Nielsen See Kaj's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:Your editing is spotless, Allen. You really dramatized this scene beautifully. - Michelle Alton See Michelle's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 2:WOW, Allen! This is incredibly beautiful! Congratulations on your outstanding finalist!
