CONTEST REMINDER... A photo can only be entered once in BetterPhoto's monthly contest. Images that have been substantially reworked can be re-submitted. Otherwise, with thousands of entries to view every month, the judges want to see new photos and unique perspectives.
THIS WEEK'S TIP Get Creative: Explore the Times of Day By Jim Miotke and Kerry Drager Don't take our word for it when it comes to photographing at the right times of day. For this exercise, you get to try it yourself. Choose a nearby scene or subject. Then shoot it at different times of day. Yes, sunrise, too. You'll discover firsthand how light changes so drastically throughout the day. And you'll see how the quality of light varies, as well. This assignment can be performed over a number of days. But if it's overcast, this test won't work to the same extent as when the sun is out. Find a scene that will get direct light as the sun goes down and when it comes up, too. For example, if tall buildings or trees block the view of a low-on-the-horizon sun, switch to a more open location. This exercise will help train your eye to determine what a scene will look like in different light. That's important when scouting new locations. You'l l learn that paying attention to the light will change your whole photographic life. There aren't many photography techniques that offer guaranteed success, but routinely shooting at dynamic times of day is one of them. Note: This tip is adapted from the book co-authored by Jim Miotke and Kerry Drager: The BetterPhoto Guide to Creative Digital Photography

Article and Updates from BetterPhoto: Getting out of the middle is the number one challenge that many photographers face, points out instructor Rob Sheppard in his BetterPhoto article. Whenever anything is centered, whether that is a flower, a bird or a horizon, the image is immediately restricted in its ability to affect a viewer. Simply check out Jim Miotke's short-and-snappy video. Then have fun finding inspiration, favoriting images, and taking part in the Web's best photo contest! Stop by BetterPhoto's home page and find out what's trending - every single day!
