P.S.: Just why should you take a BetterPhoto course? Here's a great answer from instructor Jim Zuckerman:
- "Online photo courses are like virtual classrooms but not in real time. Other students can see your pictures, read the instructor's critiques, and comment on your work. Similarly, you can comment on the pictures of other students. It is a unique and wonderful learning experience.
"One of the great things about these online courses is that students participate from all over the world. In a single lesson's uploads, you may see pictures from Bryce Canyon or Brazil, or from Singapore or South Carolina. It's a very stimulating environment, and it will help you become the photographer or digital artist that you would like to be."

- Joannie M. Bertucci See Joannie's Basic BetterPholio™ Visit joansimages.com - Joannie's Deluxe BetterPholio™ Response 1:Thank you, everyone, for taking a moment of your time to comment, it is greatly appreciated. Joannie, what can I say as far as suggestions ... keep doing what you love, don't be defeated. There will be those who love and those that hate what you do, you must develop a sort of armadillo skin, and be able to roll with the critiques but don't let it get you down, learn from it, enjoy those 1-day highs, because you will have 6-day lows. I personally live vicariously through my models through my lens...I see ME in THEM, lol. Remember, once your passion feels like a JOB then it is time to stop, recoup, and then come back to it, you really have to have a love for photography. I also took a couple of classes here on BP, and enjoyed them. I have researched, read, and most of all, I have practiced and created. Photography is a never-ending learning experience, always something new. BUT it's so weird when you think about it, because anything that can be done in photography has been done, you just have to put your own spin on things. Learn the rules of photography so that you can break them, that is my biggest suggestion. Peace,
New Photo Discussion 2: Cayucos Pier at Dawn
- Heather Loewenhardt See Heather's Basic BetterPholio™ Response 1:Hi Heather, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm really pleased that you liked the photo. Twilight - dawn or evening - is really my favorite time of day for seascapes. And, as you mention, this pier fit the scene nicely ... I particularly liked how the early-morning cool blue contrasted with the warm color of the lights and reflections. As (almost) always with outdoor scenes, I went with a daylight/sunlight White Balance - a "neutral" setting that so often reproduces the color of light just the way I saw it. Other photo notes: I use a tripod for all stationary scenes in order to keep the camera steady and to fine-tune the composition. Along with the tripod, I routinely use a cable shutter release to keep my hand off the camera and prevent possible vibration. (The self-timer also works.) Since this exposure was such a very long one, I also used my camera's mirror lockup (a shooting feature that's available on some, but not all, DSLRs).
