Featured Article: Get Creative with Wide-angle, HDR and Textures

Each month, the best Before and After will be featured in the Digital Darkroom. To participate, upload a Before (original) picture then start a discussion on it (using the Discuss This Photo link under the picture). After telling us how you did created the effect, select "1" or "2" from the Upload Image pull-down menu, and submit an optional intermediate image and a final (After) photo. Aim to educate and inspire by sharing a concise, detailed explanation of your technique. Enjoy! |

New Photo Discussions
New Photo Discussion 1: January Sunrise
- Kathleen R. Struckle See Kathleen's Basic BetterPholio Response 1:Thank you, Kathleen! I just purchased Topaz filters and am having fun experimenting. It was a beautiful sunrise but I intensified the colour with a Topaz adjust filter. - Laura L. Regnier See Laura's Basic BetterPholio Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
New Photo Discussion 2: Red Top Rye Bottles
- Michelle T. Hekle Visit heklephotoimages.com - Michelle's Deluxe BetterPholio Response 1:Michelle: The HDR effect came from the program Photomatix. I think you can download a trial version from their website. Better Photo offers an HDR class, and that is where I discovered Photomatix. I use Aperture and Photomatix appears as a plugin when you install it. The diffusion filter is part of Tiffen dfx. About a zillion different filter effects. - Greg Rhodes See Greg's Basic BetterPholio Response 2:GREAT edit. This is a wonderful image. - Sarah G See Sarah's Basic BetterPholio Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
New Photo Discussion 3: Gorgeous Grunge!

New Photo Discussion 4: Ghostly Liam
- Michelle Alton See Michelle's Basic BetterPholio Response 1:Thank you for the wonderful comments, Michelle. I didn't have enough space in the description area to explain the "how-to's." So here it is (skipping the basics in PS5 and Lightroom3): - First - I used my LensBaby Composer to create the shallow DoF with an F/8 aperture; lens bent to the right. - added two textures from the "Summer Painterly" collection that I purchased from Flypaper Textures. - Added a 3rd texture that I created myself from the ceiling of the restaurant where I took this shot. Used "Liquify" to morph the ceiling into the lines that you see throughout the shot
New Photo Discussion 5: Shoe Shine
- Sarah A. Christian See Sarah's Basic BetterPholio Visit schristian-photography.com - Sarah's Deluxe BetterPholio Response 1:Thank you, Sarah. I used the Spherize tool in Photoshop and then did a lighting effect. I never know how they are going to end up when I start playing with filters. :) - Mike Dougherty See Mike's Basic BetterPholio Read this discussion online Respond to this discussion
