Welcome to the 100th issue of the Digital Darkroom

Hi

BetterPhoto is marking another landmark occasion: the 100th issue of Digital Darkroom! In this edition, we have a lot of news, notes, tips, and techniques, including:

    - Check out the work of two outstanding instructors ... Jim Zuckerman's Featured Article ("How to Eliminate Unwanted Foregrounds") and Deb Sandidge's Featured Blog ("HDR in B&W - A Timeless Look with a Twist").

    - Rob Sheppard has a new course with video lessons: A Darkroom Called Lightroom. It's fully interactive!

    - Don't miss the excellent Photo Di scussions by BetterPhoto members.

    - "What was the last creative project you did?" This was a key question asked by Jim Miotke in this past weekend's highly successful Creative Confidence Webinar. Read an interesting - and inspiring - Team BetterPhoto blog on the subject.

That's it for this month. Enjoy reading this 100th Digital Darkroom, and have fun with your photography!

It's sure neat to view a scene with so many tones of b/whites... Wish I knew how to change my coloured shots with my program of PS7 into beautiful b/w masterpieces like this, Bruce...
Sincerely, Chris

Response 1:Thank you, Christine:

I did something different with this picture. I used a polarizer, but I underexposed by 2 stops to get the clouds close to proper exposure and used a flash that at +2 EV to expose the front building.
I was experimenting. I used curves (in Photoshop) to bring the house on the left back from the shadows.

I absolutely love this photo! What an awesome job you did putting it all together. I was wondering if you might share your steps. I have thought of doing something like this but never knew where to begin.
Love the picture!

Response 2:Thanks, I really don't care for Photoshop and don't use it much but this is a multifaceted layered PS7 image. First, my girl posed behind this old window. I liked her pose and expression, and the composition, but it needed better light. I didn't like the colors so I created this.
First, I used lucis art filter, then I hand-painted the face and hair in PS7 to give her a different look. I dodged and burned in areas too. After that, I layered on a design that I made from an old stock image and flattened it to give the illusion of a sound wave effect. I finalized it when I converted it to gray and liked the results. It's bizarre but I think that it's cool. Thanks for the comments!

Response 1:Thank you so much, Robert. My Dad left this to me. I finally got the courage to get it out and unfold it. I was pretty scared I would tear it, but it came out just fine, and I immediately took this photo.
