Featured Article: Depth of Field in Digital Photography: Photoshop Solution
After arriving home from Carnival in Venice, Italy, instructor Jim Zuckerman started working on his images in Photoshop. Besides simply processing the Raw files, he writes in a BP article, "I look for composite material that will allow me to come up with images unlike anyone else has. There are lots of photographers at carnival in Venice, and I like to create digital photos that are unique to my own way of seeing things".

Digital Before and After

Redbeckia from my garden.

All work done in PSCS3. Removed background using magnetic lasso. Used Topaz in several layers to bring out differing qualities in the flower. Painted background using many, many brushes, textures, blends and layers.
Sampled all the colors from the flower itself with the eye dropper and then using various blend modes. Cloned out imperfections in the flower. A bit of Topaz Simplify in the end and, using a layer mask, painted it into the areas I wanted it to affect.

Response 1:Thanks, Gene! I always have fun messing around with filters. The "double-Polar-Coordinates" trick - to make a photoball - created an ellipse initially (since the photo was rectangular, not square, to begin with). And then I did a 180-degree turn on the "circle with the saint" (against the blue background at lower center), so that he was upright (the initial result had him upside down). Finally, I used the Transform-Warp to tweak the ellipse into more of an egg/oval shape. An egg shape seemed appropriate for a photo of a czarist-era church dome, given the Faberge connection with the czars, etc.
